Obama's Supreme Court choice a blown opportunity

It's simultaneously touching and infuriating that, after seven years of abuse, President Barack Obama still thinks his Republican foes are interested in meeting him in the middle.

On Wednesday he nominated a moderate 63-year-old white man to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated last month by the death of conservative firebrand Justice Antonin Scalia.

Obama's pick of the D.C. Circuit's chief appellate judge, Merrick Garland, disappointed his liberal base — we were hoping for a younger, more progressive nominee, perhaps one who would add to the ethnic or gender diversity of the court — and seemed to do little to move his conservative opponents from their no-way-no-how...
