In 1987, Ronald Reagan nominated Judge Douglas Ginsburg to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the nomination was withdrawn 10 days later when it was revealed that Ginsburg had smoked marijuana “on a few occasions” in the 1960s and 1970s.

Ginsburg is 72, retired from the bench. The whole thing seems ridiculous now. What kind of bullet did we think we were dodging?

One unintentional byproduct of the current moment is that pot advocates have what they always crave (besides Doritos): a potent national narrative that underscores the scourge of alcohol. Everybody knows about drunken rampages. Pot rampages, not so much.
