UConn Names Captains
Carson Cross, Bobby Melley and Jordan Tabakman have been named captains of the UConn baseball team for the 2015 season. They were announced by coach Jim Penders after a team vote at the conclusion of the fall training period. Cross (shoulder surgery) missed all of last season. He was 9-4 in 2013. Melley hit .359 and was team MVP last season. Tabakman is 13-7 in his career. ... UConn women's hockey goaltender Elaine Chuli has earned her second WHEA defensive player of the week award this season. She stopped 83 of 86 shots in two games in the Nutmeg Classic. ... Freshman Matt Mareno of the Post University men's basketball team was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rookie of the week for the second straight week. He had 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in a 73-65 victory over regionally ranked Stonehill Sunday. ... Victor Ljuljdjuraj of the Albertus Magnus men's basketball team has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference player of the week. Ljuljdjuraj had 30 points and 14 rebounds in a victory over SUNY-Purchase.
Bucknell 72, Fairfield 66 (OT): A career performance from K.J. Rose and a good offensive effort from Marcus Gilbert was not enough for the Fairfield men basketball to overcome a late surge from Bucknell as the Bison posted a 72-66 decision over the Stags in overtime. Rose had a personal-best 26 points while Gilbert made six of seven shots enroute to a 17-point night.
Wesleyan 76, MCLA 55: Jack Mackey and Rashid Epps had 14 points apiece to lead the Wesleyan men (5-2) to a 76-55 victory against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (1-4) Monday night in North Adams, Mass. BJ Davis and Joe Edmonds added 10 points each in the Cardinals' well-rounded attack.
Wesleyan 66, St. Joseph 51: Kaylie Williams had 12 points, Dreisen Heath had 11 and Miller Hartsoe had 10 to lead the Wesleyan women to a 66-51 win against St. Joseph Monday night in West Hartford. Brianna Ferraro led St. Joseph with 17 points, Heather Framski had 12 and Carlee Putnam added 11 for the Hawks. Wesleyan improved to 3-3 overall on the season; St. Joseph, which had its three-game win streak snapped, is 4-2.
Shriver To Speak
Special Olympics Connecticut will present "An Evening with Dr. Timothy Shriver," chairman of Special Olympics and author of the newly released memoir "Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most," on Dec. 10. The evening will include a book signing and discussion, from 6-7:30 p.m., at Yale University's Payne Whitney Gym, 70 Tower Parkway, New Haven. Admission is $25, and includes an autographed copy of the book. The book discussion will be followed by a private reception with Shriver at 7 p.m. in Yale University's Kiphuth Trophy Room.
