On The Fly: How Good Will Towns Be? We Will See

Was Towns the right pick? We will see in a few years

We'll check back in 10 years to see how historic a night it was. But for now, let's just say the selection of Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns with the first pick of the NBA draft by Minnesota was not unexpected. We'll see whether his star eventually ascends higher than D'Angelo Russell or Jahlil Okafor.

Let us not forget the United States plays China Friday in the World Cup quarterfinals in Ottawa (7:30 p.m.). Both this and the Elite Eight bash between Germany and France, which will precede it at 4 p.m, will be on Fox's main network, as opposed to one with a number after it. U.S. midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday will be suspended for Friday's quarterfinal because of too many yellow cards.

We "Volunteer" this because we know you care: Tennessee's plan to eliminate the Lady Vols nickname in all women's sports — other than basketball — remained off the agenda for Thursday's Board of Trustees meeting after legions of legislators asked it to reconsider the school's decision. Tennessee announced in November all teams other than the women's basketball squad would be called Volunteers starting July 1. Think about that, Lady Huskies fans.

You may remember Elena Delle Donne? Well, it's time to get re-acquainted since she's the WNBA's MVP at the quarter poll. She scored a career-high 45 points during the Chicago Sky's 100-96 overtime win over Atlanta Wednesday. Delle Donne set a WNBA record by making 19 consecutive free throws, passing Angel McCoughtry's mark of 17. She also had the sixth-highest point total in a league game — six short of the record — and is averaging 31.6 points. That's the most to start a season for a player's first seven games since the 193 Maya Moore rung up last season.

The Connecticut Sun have won six straight games and lead the WNBA's Eastern Conference. They are fresh from a three-game sweep of road games in Seattle, Phoenix and Los Angeles. And they return to the Mohegan Sun Arena Friday to play the winless Sparks, the first of three home games from now until July 2.

The Charlotte Hornets made a draft day deal Thursday sending newly acquired Luke Ridnour to Oklahoma City for former UConn star Jeremy Lamb. … Former University of Hartford pitcher Sean Newcomb, a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels, will play in this year's All-Star Futures Game. So will Rock Cats shortstop Trevor Story … The Mets ended their seven-game losing streak and the Red Sox lost to Baltimore after putting Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list and sending pitcher Joe Kelly to Pawtucket.

The Courant sincerely thanks those who came to Rentschler Field Thursday to honor the state's greatest high school athletes. Each of the 28 athletes of the year in individual varsity sports was feted at an all-star banquet. Hard work pays off.
