Barcher To Be InductedInto New England Hall

Bloomfield boys basketball coach Gary Barcher is part of the 2015 New England Basketball Hall of Fame induction class. He has a 244-138 record, including the 2002 Class L and '08 S state championships and three CCC Tournament titles. He also coached from 1986-1999 at South Windsor. His overall career record is 347-305. The induction ceremony is at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 8. ... Rising senior forward Hanna Astrom of the Yale women's ice hockey team has earned a spot at another training camp for Team Sweden. This camp, the second one she has been selected for this summer, takes place Aug. 3-6 in Gavle, Sweden. She is one of 26 players (including 14 forwards) selected for the camp, which includes six practices. The camp roster includes 11 players who were on Sweden's roster for the 2014 Olympics. Astrom played for Team Sweden in the 4 Nations Tournament in December. ... Western Connecticut State University graduate Nina Wojtkiewicz has been recognized as a Little East Conference honoree for the 2015 National Collegiate Athletic Association Woman of the Year award. The volleyball and softball player was one of 480 athletes to be nominated for the conference honor.

McLaughlin Wins NE Amateur

Nick McLaughlin shot 70-70 in his final two rounds to win the New England Amateur with a 7-under-par total of 281 at Baker Hill Golf Club in Newbury, N.H. McLaughlinn, from Far Corner GC-Boxford, Mass., added this title to his Massachusetts Amateur crown won last week. Ben Balter of Weston (Mass.) GC finished second (69-73, 282 total). Second-round leader Brian Carlson of Madison and Clinton CC tied for third (73-71, 283) with Joe Leavitt of Atkinson (N.H.) CC, who finished with a 75 and a 71. ... University of Hartford men's golf team members Will Betts, Wally Gonzalez, Evan Russell, and Daniel Yustin were named 2014-15 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. They were honored for posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher while having a stroke-average of 76.0 or better for the 2014-15 campaign.

Rock Cats Snap Losing Streak

The New Britain Rock Cats ended a four-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory against the Reading Fightin Phils Thursday night at New Britain Stadium. The Rock Cats used a four-run fifth inning highlighted by Noel Cuevas' two-run single to build on a 3-0 lead and never looked back in their first home win since the All-Star break. Pat Valaika also had a two-run double for New Britain. Rock Cats starting pitcher Bryan Evans hurled six scoreless innings allowing only three singles. He did not allow a hit after the third inning. The Rock Cats continue their four-game weekend series against the Fightin Phils Friday night at New Britain Stadium at 7:05.
