On The Fly: Celtics' Pursuit Of Hayward Creating Rift In Ainge Family?

The NBA free agent season is underway this weekend, and the Celtics reportedly have eyes on Gordon Hayward, who played for coach Brad Stevens at Butler. The other piece of Danny Ainge's plan? Trading for Paul George, who has a year left on his contract. According to reports, the Celtics hope George will fall in love with Boston and Stevens and will ink a long-term contract. But the Los Angeles Times reports George, a Southern California native, is "still telling friends he intends to be a Laker in 2018." Do the Celtics take him as a one-year rental and spend the season romancing him? Ainge has to ask himself: What would Red Auerbach do?

The pursuit of Hayward is causing a divide in the Ainge family. Danny and son Austin, Celtics director of player personnel, are trying to lure Hayward from Utah. So Tanner, another son who is a Congressional candidate in Utah, has been talking about why Hayward should stay in Salt Lake City. Tanner Ainge, a Republican running for Rep. Jason Chaffetz's seat, tweeted a story to Hayward about Massachusetts considering a millionaires tax. "Something to consider over the next few days," Tanner wrote. … The Carmelo Anthony-Phil Jackson standoff is over. The Knicks have dumped Jackson and, it seems, the triangle offense. Does Melo stay in New York? His former college coach blames Jackson's offense for any issues Anthony's had at MSG. "The triangle is the worst offense ever, unless you have Michael [Jordan] or Kobe [Bryant]," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN. Jackson, of course, won his NBA titles with Jordan and Bryant. And Boeheim's only NCAA title came with Anthony.

Could there be a Bartolo Colon return to New York? Colon was waived by the Braves after he posted an 8.14 ERA. He'll likely clear waivers and will be be a free agent. At 44, he could be finished. Or the Mets could sign him to replace the salty Mr. Met. Fans at Citi Field love Big Bartolo. … Joe Paterno's family dropped a lawsuit against the NCAA. The Paterno estate sued the NCAA for using the Freeh report in the Jerry Sandusky child abuse case to punish Penn State and Paterno. The family voluntarily dropped the lawsuit, and there was no payment. … Good news for New London's Kris Dunn: The Bulls have waived point guard Rajon Rondo. With Rondo gone, Dunn should have an opportunity to earn minutes. The Bulls acquired Dunn from the Timberwolves in the Jimmy Butler trade on draft night.
