On The Fly: Poor Start Means Braves' Fredi Gonzalez Is Out Of A Job

Gonzalez fired by Braves

Nine wins in 37 games isn't a good start to a baseball season — or any season for that matter — and doesn't exactly inspire confidence for the future, so Fredi Gonzalez is no longer the manager of the Atlanta Braves. Gonzalez represents the first firing of the season with the Braves sitting at an MLB-worst 9-28, 13½ games out of first place in the NL East. The manager is always the fall guy, but the Braves can't hit (.229, 11 home runs). Brian Snitker will move up from Triple A Gwinnett as interim manager. ... Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams of New Zealand has apologized for postgame comments following the Thunder's stunning win at Golden State Monday. He called the Warriors guards "quick little monkeys." "It was just a poor choice of words, mate," Adams told USA Today. "I wasn't thinking straight. I didn't know it was going to upset anyone, but I'm truly sorry. It was just a poor choice of words. I was just trying to express how difficult it was chasing those guys around." ... Gun Runner finished third in the Kentucky Derby but will skip the Preakness. The draw is Wednesday. Unbeaten Nyquist tries to go 9-for-9 and get one step away from a Triple Crown.

Rich Marchese of Southington is headed to the Maui Invitational. Marchese entered five brackets in the ESPN Tournament Challenge, according to a press release from ESPN. Marchese picked Villanova to win it all on one of the men's basketball brackets. Of the more than 13 million brackets entered, that got him into the top 1 percent in the final standings. He then was randomly selected to receive the grand prize, which includes a trip for two to the tournament. And he got even more lucky: UConn is in the field. ... Central men's basketball coach Donyell Marshall will get to coach his son. Donyell Marshall Jr. is a 6-6 forward who will be joining the Blue Devils as a preferred walk-on. "To be able to coach one of my kids is a dream come true," Marshall said in a statement. Marshall averaged eight blocks as a junior in high school. ... The San Diego Chargers nabbed QB Zach Mettenberger Tuesday, a day after Tennessee waived him. Ken Whisenhunt, the Chargers' offensive coordinator, worked with Mettenberger as Titans' coach the past two years. ... And finally, Rangers second basemen Rougned Odor is getting an eight-game suspension for the punch seen 'round the world to the jaw of the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista.
