Of The Fly: Djokovic Bounced Early At Australian Open

Even the best get upset, but who thought Novak Djokovic would lose so soon at the Australian Open. He has won five of the past six titles. On Thursday he lost in five sets to Denis Istomin, an unlikely outcome. Istomin is ranked No. 117 and got in by a wild card. He played that card well in a match that went 4 hours, 48 minutes. ... Former major leaguer Jerry Glanville tweeting on Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell: "Every time I saw @astros Jeff Bagwell get into that squat, I knew trouble was lurking." Bobby Whalen, Bagwell's Cape Cod Baseball League coach: "I realized two things about him right away: First, he did not want to be good, he wanted to be great, in every aspect of the game. Second, he made the commitment to becoming a major league player every day. Many kids enjoy the competition and status of being in the Cape league, but Jeff showed up for early outs every day to work at getting better." More on Bagwell: Former President George H.W. It was actually big back-to-back days in Hall of Fame news as it relates to Connecticut. Dee Rowe will get a lifetime achievement award from the Basketball Hall of Fame. Mr. UConn has touched the game in so many ways and is a beloved figure. The announcement of his award came Thursday.

Voter fraud! Russell Westbrook averages a triple-double but he is not a starting guard for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game. Isiah Thomas of the Celtics averages 28.7 points, but he won't start at guard for the Eastern Conference. ... Former UConn player Rudy Gay of the Sacramento Kings is out for the season. He needs surgery on a ruptured left Achilles tendon. Gay, hurt Wednesday night, was having a fine season, averaging 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. ...
