Meryl Larraine Johnston

Meryl Larraine (Brown) Johnston, 71, wife of Alan Johnston, of Newington, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018 after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Meryl was born in Natick, MA to Arlyne and Crawford Brown on September 2, 1946. The family moved to Connecticut when she was young, and Meryl graduated Conard High School in West Hartford in 1964. She married her love Alan Johnston May 1, 1976 in Jewett City surrounded by their friends. Meryl committed her life to caring for others and worked at Interim HealthCare for many years before retiring in 2009. Throughout the years, Meryl volunteered her time with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and PTA. Meryl loved swimming and often went to the beach with family and friends. She also frequented the Rocky Hill Dog Park with her Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu, Coco. She met a wonderful community of people there, and will be dearly missed by all those who knew her. Meryl is survived by her husband, Alan Johnston, children; daughter, Dawn Gordon of New Britain; daughter, Melinda Courtney of Pheonix, Arizona; son, Brian Johnston of West Hartford; daughter, Brie Wolf and husband, Nick, of Coventry. She is also survived by her siblings; sister, Linda Smith of Farmington; brother, Gregory Brown and wife, Lynn, of Hartford; and brother, Jeffrey Brown and wife, Ruth, and their children, of West Hartford; her grandchildren; Adam, Crystal and Jordan Courtney of Pheonix, Arizona and Erin Gordon of Newington. Meryl is predeceased by her parents, brother-in-law Carl Smith and nephew Stephen Smith. The family of Meryl Johnston will receive visitors at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Avenue, Newington on Thursday, September 13th from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at Newington Memorial Funeral at 11:00 am.
