Carl Francis Austin, 88, of 14 Talcott Lane, Durham, Connecticut, died Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 24, 1930, in Westport, New York, son of Clarence and Lillian Austin. He was a graduate of Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He did graduate work at City College of New York and Yale University. After college Carl worked for Johns-Manville Corporation in Manville, New Jersey as an Assistant Comptroller in their Research Center before joining the Packard Bell Corporation followed by the Rexall Drug and Chemical Company both in Los Angles as a Financial Analysis. In 1967 Carl joined Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut and at the time of his retirement in 1990 was Sr. Vice President for Finance and Management. Carl was drafted into the Infantry as a Staff Sargent during the Korean War. He was detached from the Army and served with the CIA in Korean for two years during the War. He is survived by his wife, Susan Abbe of Durham, son, Phillip Geoffrey (Ellie) Austin of Middletown, daughter, Amy (John) Herman of North Oxford, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, Colton Herman, Stephen Austin, and Lillian Hill and three great-grandchildren, Shayla, Shoshana, and Zoe Blake. A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 10th at 11 am at the Mica Hill Cemetery located on Mica Hill Road, Durham, Connecticut. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, unrestricted memorial contributions may be made to the Middlesex United Way, Middlesex Hospital or a charity of donor's choice.
