Endorsements Roll Out For Candidates Running For Newington's 27th District House Seat

With just eight weeks until Election Day, the two candidates for Newington’s 27th District seat in the state House of Representatives are collecting endorsements.

Republican state Rep. Gary Byron is facing a challenge from Democratic newcomer Gary Turco in the Nov. 6 general election.

Byron, who has represented Newington since 2014 at the Capitol, announced last week that he was endorsed by the Independent Party of Connecticut. His name will appear both on the Republican and Independent lines on November’s ballot.

“The Independent Party’s goal of nonpartisan problem-solving is the exact approach I have always taken and will continue to take if voters send me back to Hartford to be their voice,” Byron said in a press release. “I’ve always been an independent thinker and believe it’s the path that we need more often in the legislature to get our state’s economy firing on all cylinders.”

The Independent Party said it endorsed Byron for his views on government spending, taxes, budget reform and economic growth.

“We enthusiastically endorse Rep. Gary Byron’s candidacy and look forward to his victory in November,” Independent Party co-chairman Michael Duff said. “He has a bright future in government if he so chooses.”

Turco, a newcomer to the political scene, was endorsed by the Working Families Party, as well as organizations such as Run for Something, National Organization for Women and Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense.

“I am honored to be endorsed by these working men and women, who truly represent the core of our community and stand for the values we should all live by in Newington as well as across the state,” Turco said. “The Working Families and Democratic parties both are fighting for economic justice, tax fairness, living wages and workers rights.”

Lindsay Farrell, state director for the Working Families Party, said the organization endorsed Turco for his ability to listen and get things done.

“Gary can be counted on to fight for all of us, not stand on the sidelines giving lip service while advocating for the super wealthy of Connecticut,” she said. “That’s why the Connecticut Working Families Party is proud to endorse his campaign.”
