An early afternoon fire heavily damaged the first floor of the Portuguese Club of Hartford and left one firefighter injured, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at around 2 p.m. at the club, at 730 North Mountain Road in Newington,. It wasn’t officially open, but about a half dozen people were on the first floor and managed to escape, officials said.
Fire officials say the fire apparently started on the first floor, and when they arrived flames were coming out a few of the windows. It took them about 40 minutes to contain the flames. Most of the damage to the club was on the first floor.
One firefighter suffered an ankle injury and was taken to a hospital.
Firefighters stayed into the night, making sure hot spots were out.
Officials are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. The club will be closed indefinitely.
