Hamden PD: Theft Suspect Pulls Knife Over Stolen Soap

A suspected shoplifter who pulled a knife on a worker who tried to stop him from stealing soap products now faces a robbery charge, police said.

Mark Woods, 45, of Thompson Street in New Haven also is charged with sixth-degree larceny. No one was injured during the tussle.

According to police, the clash happened about 8:15 p.m. Monday when a man tried to walk out of the Family Dollar Store, 1245 Dixwell Ave. in Hamden, with a bag full of soap products. The employee tried to detain him in the store, and the two began to struggle.

The man, later identified as Woods, then pulled out a knife, police said. A bystander joined in and helped the worker pull the knife away from Woods.
