A New Haven man allegedly stole two pressure washers from the Home Depot on Dixwell Avenue early Friday morning and returned about five hours later for a backpack leaf blower, police said.
A loss prevention officer at the store prevented Keith Highsmith, 56, of Maple Street from taking anything on the second trip, police said. Highsmith fled in a Cadillac and then on foot before he was caught, police said. He had four bags of crack cocaine when he was arrested, police said.
Highsmith was charged with fourth-degree larceny, possession of narcotics, engaging police in pursuit, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, reckless driving, misusing plates, evading responsibility and following too closely. He also had an outstanding warrant for violating his probation, police said.
He was held in lieu of $10,000 and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Meriden on Oct. 19.
