Crash With Serious Injuries on Route 2 In East Hartford

Seven people were injured, three seriously, in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down an eastbound section of Route 2 in East Hartford on Thursday afternoon and evening.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a tractor-trailer, a box truck and two cars were involved in a crash, Fire Chief John Oates said. All the victims were taken to hospitals, and one person in each of the cars had to be freed by firefighters using hydraulic tools, Oates said.

One car was hit on both sides and was so compressed that the passenger side and driver’s side doors nearly met, the chief said.

“There was a significant amount of work to do to get to them,” he said of the pinned victims.

Eastbound lanes near Exit 5A were still closed through the rush hour, state police spokeswoman Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said. The highway reopened by 6:30.
