Canton Teacher Charged With Sex Assault After Relationship With Student, Police Say

Police have arrested a former Canton High School special education teacher who they say carried on a sexual relationship with a student.

Lindsey Barth, 30, of Avonwood Road in Avon was charged Tuesday with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree sexual assault, police said Wednesday. He was released on a promise to appear in Superior Court in Hartford on Aug. 21.

The female student was between 16 and 18, Sgt. Derek Messier said. While the relationship was consensual and the teen was above the age of consent, Barth violated a state law that prohibits such relationships between a school staff member and a student, he said.

Police began investigating the case on June 25, after a third party alerted police to the relationship, Messier said.

Barth resigned from his position at Canton High School effective Aug. 3, according Superintendent Kevin D. Case.

“While I am not aware of the details of specific incident(s), I was informed by the Canton Police that there is no evidence that the incident(s) occurred on school grounds,” Case wrote in a statement.

Barth was an 11th grade paraeducator who taught one social science class, according to the superintendent.
