Peter Asher and Albert Lee are both legends of rock and popular music, but they’re the kind of legends who might only be known to serious students of the music.

Asher was half of the pop-folk group Peter & Gordon, who had a hit with several Paul McCartney-penned songs, like “A World Without Love.” Theirs was a kind of sweet coffeehouse folk. Asher went on to a successful career as a producer and manager and record honcho — having worked with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and others.

Lee is a guitarist who worked has as a sideman with scores of artists, including the Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton.

This is a show for oldies fans and music buffs who like to pore over the liner notes and dig down into the foundations of a recording. This is a rare chance to hear stories and songs from two artists who helped shape some of the music that many of us are steeped in.

Peter Asher and Albert Lee perform at Cafe Nine, 250 State St., New Haven, on Friday, July 1, at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $30. 203-789-8281 or cafenine.com.
