Mariah Carey was put in the unfortunate position of learning about the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas while doing a recent live interview on British television to promote her upcoming UK tour. The setting and her response struck many as inappropriate and insensitive, but it served to spotlight the strange predicaments someone like Carey can get in. She’s famous for her voice, and for her songs. People call her a diva. It doesn’t seem entirely fair to expect her to be a public spokesperson in a time of national grief and horror.
Carey, of course, has been in the tabloids before, for high-profile divorces, engagements and split-ups, as well as for a famously flubbed live performance on New Year’s Eve. She’s even a reality show star. For years now, Carey has focused on hitting the sweet spot between classic vocals and hip-hop-spiced feel-good hits. Her recent single, “I Don’t” (featuring YG), is powered by a little bit of the old and a little of the new. She’s come to be atop the heap of performers who turn the winter months into a green-and-red run of Christmas music.
