Daley is a young British neo-soul singer with a voice that slides from airy falsetto to brief flashes of more robust depths.
His new record, “The Spectrum,” is his second, and it features Jill Scott on the slow and smooth “Until the Pain Is Gone.” Fans of James Blake and La Roux will find points of connection in Daley’s ability to skillfully use technology while evoking significant styles from the past. Maxwell and D’Angelo are obvious clear inspirations too. There’s a slow-burn appeal to “The Spectrum,” moody and romantic, with flashes of abstract sonic touches — haunting reverb, lush strings and a minimalist logic. (There’s actually a song called “Slow Burn” on the record.)
Daley’s influences and obsessions include Prince, the Cranberries, Star Wars and Radiohead, which gives you some idea of where he’s coming from. He likes rock. He likes R&B. He’s sentimental. And he doesn’t mind getting a little weird. Daley comes from Manchester, a city famous for breeding musical originals.
