Kabaka Pyramid brings electronic-flavored reggae to State House

Kabaka Pyramid is a Jamaican reggae singer in the roots-revival zone. His 2018 record “Kontraband,” launches with a spongy sound that nicely blends touches of dancehall, reggae, with the sonic ricochets of dub and the phrasing of hip-hop.

If you’ve got a soft spot for what reggae giants Sly & Robbie were doing in the mid-’80s, with electronic-flavored records like “Rhythm Killers,” Kabaka Pyramid is picking the sound up and dusting it off for the 21st century. Kabaka Pyramid has a strong rhythmic style of singing, informed by hip-hop phrasing.

A Rasta with a political bent, he’s an heir to artists like Black Uhuru. He’s collaborated with like-minded singers like Damian Marley and Chronixx. Kabaka Pyramid’s music is lyrical, witty, and he embraces the noble challenge of making songs that educate and inspire.

Kabaka Pyramid will be at The State House, 294 State St., New Haven, on Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. $17 to $20. statehousepresents.com
