The Boston Marathon is a legendary foot race that took on added patriotic meaning in 2013 when a terrorist bombing near the finish line on Boylston Street killed three spectators and injured about 264.

A documentary showing in theaters nationwide, including six in Connecticut, on April 19 tells the story of the race before and after the tragic event on April 15, 2013. The screening will be two days after this year’s marathon, which is April 17.

“Boston: An American Running Story” discusses the history of the race and follows runners preparing for the 118th marathon, a year after the bombings. The evening’s entertainment also includes film of the Boston Symphony Orchestra recording an original score composed by Jeff Beal.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. It will be shown at Bloomfield 8, 863 Park Ave.; Brass Mill 12, 495 Union St. in Waterbury; Cinemark North Haven, 550 Universal Drive; Lisbon 12, 162 River Road; AMC Danbury 16, 61 Eagle Road; and Stonington 10 at 85 Voluntown Road in Pawcatuck.

Admission is $15.90 except in North Haven, where admission is $15. fathomevents.com.
