Angels defeat Tampa Bay, 7-5

Angels took a 7-2 lead against Rays in the seventh inning

KEY MOMENTS: Efren Navarro singled to lead off the sixth, stole second and scored on Mike Trout's bloop single to right. Josh Hamilton doubled to open the seventh, took third on Howie Kendrick's single and scored on David Freese's sacrifice fly. That gave the Angels two huge insurance runs for a 7-2 lead that allowed them to absorb the Rays' three-run seventh.

AT THE PLATE: Hamilton's two-hit day capped a six-game trip in which he went eight for 27 with two homers and five runs batted in. "Josh had great at-bats all trip," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "He found some rhythm." Trout had three hits and two RBIs, giving him three multihit games on the trip and 80 RBIs for the season. Kendrick and Navarro each had two hits.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver (12-6) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings, walking four, striking out three and pitching out of numerous jams. "It was a tough one, a grind, but it's nice to come out on top," Weaver said. "Tampa Bay did a good job of putting my back against the wall. They did a good job of battling." Huston Street retired the side in order in the ninth for his sixth save with the Angels and 30th of the season.

ROSTER MOVES: Reliever Joe Thatcher, who suffered a left-ankle sprain Saturday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and is expected to be sidelined until late August. Left-hander Michael Roth, who saved the bullpen by absorbing 4 2/3 innings of Saturday's 10-3 loss, was optioned to double-A Arkansas. "He understands the situation," Scioscia said of Roth. "We need to get some fresh arms here." Right-handers Fernando Salas and Cam Bedrosian were recalled from the minor leagues.

EXTRA BASES: Outfielder Collin Cowgill, on the DL since July 13 because of a broken nose and a small fracture in his right thumb, is expected to be activated Monday after a three-game rehabilitation stint at triple-A Salt Lake. … Like Kendrick, Rays second baseman Logan Forsythe had a 13-pitch at-bat, one that ended with a walk against reliever Kevin Jepsen in the seventh. … Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria's sacrifice bunt in the fifth was the first of his career.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (11-4, 2.74 earned-run average) will oppose Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke (12-6, 2.65) at Dodger Stadium on Monday at 7 p.m. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
