An honorary doctorate allows the recipient to legally use the title of 'Dr.' in front of their name; a right that famed writer Maya Angelou regularly uses, especially in her classroom. Despite never receiving a formal college education, Dr. Angelou has taught students at Wake Forest University for more than 30 years. In addition to the honorary doctorate given to her by Wake Forest in 1977, Angelou has received more than 30 doctorates, including Doctorate of Literature from Lawrence University in 1976, Doctorate of Fine Arts from Northeastern University in 1992 and Tufts University in 1985, and Doctorate of Letters from Smith College in 1975, and Howard University and Rollins College in 1985.
