Connecticut is home to three of the top cupcake shops in the country, at least according to The Daily Meal's recently-released 2015 list of "101 Best Cupcakes In America."
NoRA Cupcake Company of Middletown was a repeat honoree, having made the list in 2014. Daily Meal placed the offbeat shop at #36 this year, mentioning its line of cocktail-inspired cakes along with its more "family-friendly" cake options and its savory creations.
At #37, JCakes of North Branford was noted for its "ooey-gooey mousse flavoring that consistently surprises and delights guests" and its cannoli cupcake flavor with cannoli cream filling and shell topping.
And at #47, Hardcore Sweet of Waterbury was touted for its "passion for sweets and rockabilly style." "Combining artistic and musical influences, this cupcakery is full of wacky names and challenging concoctions," editors wrote, spotlighting the bakery's chicken and waffle cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting and maple syrup.
Daily Meal editors explained their criteria in a story accompanying the list, noting that menu variety, presentation, consistency and artistic creativity all factored into the decisions. Editors also took social media into account, looking at number of followers and community engagement, and they scanned online review sites to determine customers' satisfaction with each location. The list of 100 was culled from more than 300 bakeries and shops, Daily Meal wrote.
