If you've yearned for draft beer with your ribs and pulled pork at Bear's Smokehouse in Hartford, your wish is about to come true. With a new beer and wine permit, the Arch Street restaurant marks the occasion Friday with an all-day "happy hour" from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Three Connecticut draft beers (Black Hog Granola Brown, Olde Burnside Penny Weiz and Stony Creek Cranky IPA) are $5, with an assortment of $4 Connecticut bottles and cans from Back East, City Steam, Broad Brook, Half Full, Thomas Hooker, Two Roads and Top Shelf. The event also features tastings from local breweries, live music and food specials.
Ten percent of Friday's sales will go to the K9s for Warriors cause, which is dedicated to providing service dogs to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and/or brain injury as a result of post-9/11 military service.
Bear's Smokehouse is also coming off a national honor from Thrillist, which named the barbecue joint as Connecticut's premier on its list of "The Best BBQ in Every State." Referencing owner Jamie "The Bear" McDonald's barbecue experience as a native of Kansas City, Thrillist notes the restaurant's unique "moink balls" - slow-smoked meatballs wrapped in bacon - and its burnt ends plate.
"Said plate's near-perfection proves McDonald knows a thing or two about the place from whence he came," Thrillist writes of the brisket chunks. "The Nutmeg State is lucky to have him there."
