O'Rourke's Diner One Of Playboy's "Best In America"

Playboy names Connecticut diner to "101 Best Breakfasts In America" list

Don't worry, this list is safe for work.

Playboy's recent "Best in America" roundup of the 101 best breakfasts in America includes an entry from Connecticut. The venerable O'Rourke's Diner in Middletown made the cut in the Northeast category, along with 20 other restaurants from New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

"...Since you're visiting a spot with a name like O'Rourke's, which sports a shamrock as it's [sic] logo, it makes sense that you'd have to order the Irish soda bread French toast," writers noted. The signature French toast is topped with homemade jams and clotted cream.

O'Rourke's, first established in 1941, was destroyed by fire in August 2006, triggered by a hamburger steamer left on overnight. At the time, owner Brian O'Rourke did not have fire insurance. But thanks to several fundraisers and the help of volunteers, the restaurant reopened about 18 months later.

The diner's banana bread French toast took the spotlight in an episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" shortly thereafter, hosted by the Food Network's Guy Fieri.

O'Rourke's is at 728 Main St. in Middletown. 860-346-6101, orourkesmiddletown.com.
