Hartford Baking May Pursue Jojo's Space; Sarah's Coffee House To Open

Soon-to-close Jojo's in Hartford may become another independent coffee shop

Jojo's Coffee announced it would close its Hartford cafe at the end of this month, but the Pratt Street storefront may possibly become home to another coffee shop in the near future.

Hartford Baking Company of West Hartford is looking into the space, president Scott Kluger confirmed Wednesday. "We've been looking for a second retail location downtown and the Pratt Street space may be what we're looking for," he said in an email, but he said his business hasn't committed to any deal at the moment.

The bakery and cafe on New Park Avenue in the town's Elmwood section, which opened in 2010, features artisanal coffee and teas, espresso beverages, European-style breads and a variety of pastries, desserts and sandwiches. After three years in business, Kluger and his team also opened a separate production facility in Bloomfield to handle larger-scale baking.

In the meantime, Hartford won't be without an independent coffee shop for very long. The city will welcome Sarah's Coffee House at 257 Asylum St. in the coming weeks. Sarah's will "source the highest-quality organic Arabica coffee beans direct from farm families and co-ops to ensure equitable practices and high quality products," according to its website. A sample menu on its Facebook page lists pastries, sandwiches, salads and soups and a planned "mini brunch" on weekends with egg dishes and French toast. Information: sarahcoffeehouse.com.
