Connecticut's first Smashburger officially opens Friday, Nov. 28 in Waterford, at 903 Hartford Turnpike.
The "better burger" chain gets its name from the chain's preferred cooking method: all-natural beef patties are "smashed" and seared on a 400-degree flattop grill. Burgers are topped with fresh produce and a variety of condiments, including avocado, spinach, cucumber, jalapeno, mushroom and goat cheese. Smashburger also offers a variety of chicken sandwiches and salads, and sides include "Smashfries" with olive oil, garlic and rosemary; "haystack onions," sweet potato fries and "veggie frites." Milkshakes are made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream.
Smashburger customizes recipes for specific markets as well; the Waterford location will offer a "Constitution" burger and chicken sandwich with provolone cheese, baby spinach, pesto, giardiniera, tomatoes and mayonnaise on a ciabatta bun, according to a news release.
The Waterford Smashburger is one of several planned for New England by Mohegan Holdings, a business diversification entity of the Mohegan Tribe. The fast-growing chain has received several nods for its business efforts over the past few years. Smashburger was named one of Forbes' "America's Most Promising Companies," and one of INC.'s 500|5000 in 2013, which ranks America's fastest-growing companies.
The restaurant will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Information: 860-437-9790, smashburger.com.
