You don't want to think about it, but you have to as a parent, the what ifs.
What if I fall and can't reach a phone? What if there's a fire? Would my 3 and a half year old know what to do? Probably not, which is a scary thought. Despite the fact that many young children know how to play games on their parents phones these days, some of them wouldn't know how or when to call 911.
I started researching and it turns out between 3 and 4 years old is the perfect time to start having conversations about what an emergency is. I sat down with my daughter last night and had the first of many talks about 911. I started small, answered a few questions and stopped when I saw her eyes glaze over a little. I found these FAQ's from a dispatcher really helpful. I'm going to take her advice about making a card with important phone numbers on it now that my daughter knows her numbers! I just hope she never has to use it.
