How fertile are you?

Now is your chance to find out.

Sher Fertility Institute of Connecticut - located in Trumbull - is offering free Fall Fertility Check-Ups.

“We see primarily patients who are having difficulty in conceiving however we believe that it’s a good idea for everyone to have unawareness of their fertility. And, unfortunately I think that many women are really out of touch with the concept of fertility and how it works," explains Dr. Ilana Ressler, a Reproductive Endocrinologist.  "Many women spend most of their life trying to avoid getting pregnant then take it for granted that it will just happen when they want it to. So, this is a way to have an assessment even well before thinking about having children just to get an idea of what’s involved, how it works.”

Women can call-up, make an appointment, then consult with Ressler or Dr. Jeff Wang.

“The big part of the evaluation is just sitting down and talking with the physician because we can tell a lot by a patient’s history and very importantly, a woman’s age, because age is one of the biggest predictors of success in fertility," says Ressler, also a mom-of-two.  The exam includes an ultrasound which helps doctors assess the health of the reproductive organs - the uterus and ovaries - and also get an idea of a woman's “ovarian reserve” - her quantity of eggs which is constantly declining as we grow older.

Believe it or not, 35 is considered "advanced maternal age" in the fertility world. “Lifespan keeps increasing but the age of menopause does not,” says Ressler.  “Many women have children above the age of 35 - even above the age of 40 - however more commonly, as women get older, they do require assistance from doctors like us.”

Ressler joined the practice last June when the facility opened in Trumbull:  “We have a really terrific new fertility center with all the state-of-the art IVF lab technology."

She loves to help people start a family...folks who can't wait to become parents:  “It’s a really unique field of medicine and I’m really grateful to be a part of it."
