Following the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the true spirit of the holiday season today: #GivingTuesday.

The online movement, now in it's third year, encourages philanthropy. The 92nd Street Y in New York founded the day to bring awareness to all the good nonprofit organizations do and to encourage donations. Now partnered with the United Nations Foundation, it includes more than 10,000 organizatios worldwide.  It's easy to participate and it's all online.  You can donate to your favorite charity or find one that peaks your interest and make a first time gift.  Then, share that you donated, with a link to the organization on social media #UNselfie.  Kathy Calvin, the CEO of the UN Foundation says "The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world."   Josh Lipshitz with the CT Association of Nonprofits tells me it's hard to pinpoint just how many Connecticut non-profts are participating, but he knows of at least 50 CT Nonprofit members. Josh tells me each has its own needs, whether it be food, toys, school supplies, winter clothes, oil and of course money.  Something else to keep in mind, if money is tight, many of the same organizations are looking for volunteers, so all you need is a little time.
