Art Bra

Think catwalk, creativity and cancer survivors!  Tickets are still available to Art Bra 2014.

The event, now in it's 6th year, raises money in support of Connecticut hospitals to help cancer survivors.  After the Storm, Inc. puts on the event.  It's founder, Christine Willett, has a bittersweet survival story.  At just 30 years old, she was diagnosed with breast cancer while she was pregnant with her second child.  Thanks to a combination of treatments, including a clinical trial, in 2009, Christine founded After the Storm, Inc.  "People were so kind and generous when I was diagnosed with meals, childcare and friendship that this was a perfect way to pay it forward.  I saw a need in the community and this was a great way to fill that need for cancer survivors" Christine says.  The event features a runway show of homemade bras, donated by volunteers which are then auctioned off.  In fact, several of the bras made this year were by high school classmates of hers she's stayed in touch with throughout the last 20 years, a testament to what a close knit community she lives in.  Hundreds attend and the event has grown so much it's now being held at the Toyota Presents Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford.  Christine says "Everyone has been extremely supportive and the best thing about Art Bra is it's fun.  I laugh all night long."  No doubt, part of the comedy stems from the halftime man show, featuring her own husband! Christine is going on her 16th year as a teacher at Green Acres in North Haven.  She says "My school community is awesome too! Parents and former students are coming and my team members have made my husband's bra."  I asked her what has surprised you about yourself since your diagnosis and recovery and she said, "The biggest is the ability to speak in front of hundreds of people.  That's something I never would have pictured myself doing.  I love going on TV too!"  The event is this Thursday and you can still purchase tickets online here.  If you can't make it, but would love to help, you can also donate on Christine's website, After the Storm Inc.
