Chris Evans says he’s done with acting after Captain America role

Chris Evans fans should not expect to see their hunk on the big screen as anyone other than Captain America in the foreseeable future, because the actor says he’s pretty much quitting his day job.

Why? Well, as they say, what he really wants to do is direct.

“I’ve known for a while … ,” the 32-year-old actor told Variety. “But [time] never really opens up. There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know what — I have to do this.”

He told the magazine that he’ll of course fulfill his six-film Marvel contract, which means he’ll suit up for at least three more “Captain America” or “The Avengers” flicks in coming years, possibly into 2017, but noted that he “can’t see” himself pursuing acting gigs beyond that.

The “What’s Your Number?” actor has already tasted life behind the camera: During his winter hiatus from the world of Marvel, he spent 19 days shooting a $3-million love story about a woman who misses her ride home at New York’s Grand Central Terminal and spends the night talking to a street musician, conveniently played by director Evans.

He recently finished editing a rough cut of the film, which is tentatively titled “1:30 Train,” he told Variety. Alice Eve, whose credits include “Entourage” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” costars.

Evans didn’t rule out changing his mind about acting, say, five years down the line, but said he’s firmly on the directing path now.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Evans’ third effort as the title’s superhero, opens April 4.

“Without these movies, I wouldn’t be directing,” he said.
