A 37-year-old man was shot to death in the South Austin neighborhood Friday night, police said, and another man was killed Saturday morning in the Irving Park neighborhood.

The man killed in Austin was shot near Menard Avenue and Thomas Street about 7:45 p.m., police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as Donald Holman, of the 1200 block of North Central Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood. He was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

It's not clear why he was shot, and police don't have a description of the shooter.

The second homicide of the night happened about 12:20 a.m. Lucas Zimmerman, 34, was shot in an alley south of Irving Park Road near Kimball Avenue.

He stumbled across the street to the parking lot of a 7-Eleven, collapsed and died. He was pronounced dead there about 12:25 a.m. Police covered his body with a white sheet while investigators took photos and videos of the scene.

Zimmerman lived in the 4800 block of North Damen Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood.

It's not clear if Zimmerman's slaying is connected with a homicide last week about a mile west on Irving Park Road and a shooting Thursday night about 5 blocks east, at Irving Park Road and Avondale Avenue.

Police believe last week's homicide was gang-related and said that the three men shot in that incident, one of whom died, were gang members from Humboldt Park who were shot when someone stepped out of a car at a stoplight and opened fire.

Four other men were shot on the South Side in separate incidents since Friday afternoon, police said, including an incident where police witnessed the shooting and followed a car containing the shooters until it crashed into another responding police car.

The officers saw someone shooting out of a car in the 4300 block of South Union Avenue about 10:20 p.m. and followed it to 4700 S. Princeton Avenue, where the shooter's car collided with a squad car. Two officers were injured in the collision, treated, and released from University of Chicago Hospital with minor injuries.

Police later found a 27-year-old shot in the 4300 block of South Union Avenue, and he was treated and released from Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

Two people are in custody and police expect prosecutors to approve charges later today.

A 28-year-old man was shot about 4:45 p.m. in the 9600 block of South Peoria Street in the Brainerd neighborhood. He's in good condition with a wound to his right ankle, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

About 4:30 p.m. a 28-year-old man was shot in the right leg near 79th and State streets in the Chatham neighborhood and walked into St. Bernard Hospital with the wound. He too is in good condition.

Another man, 30, was shot about 2 p.m. at 57th and Throop streets in the Englewood neighborhood. He is in stable condition at St. Bernard Hospital.
