'Fruitvale Station'

Release date: July 12

"Fruitvale Station," originally named "Fruitvale," was the indie darling of the Sundance Film Festival when it premiered there in early 2013. The Ryan Coogler-directed flick went on to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film, and it's picked up plenty of buzz since the Weinstein Company purchased it and set it for a limited release starting July 16. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Chad Michael Murray and Kevin Durand, "Fruitvale Station" is one to watch for if you're looking to keep up on early Oscar contenders. The film is based on the true-life story of a man named Oscar Grant who was shot to death by a police officer in Oakland, Calif.'s Fruitvale train station. Jordan plays Oscar, while Murray and Durand portray the two officers involved in his shooting.
