'Wes Craven's New Nightmare'

In this underrated 1994 gem, Wes Craven explored many of the horror-movie meta-experiences he perfected two years later in "Scream." "New Nightmare" finds the stars of the various Freddy Krueger films -- including Craven -- playing themselves under siege by a murderous demon who is trapped only as long new Freddy films are being made. It takes the form of Freddy and tries to off the cast, thus gaining access to our world. Aside from playing themselves, Craven, Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp et al debate the role of horror movies in our society... while starring in a horror movie within a horror movie to end the new nightmare. -- Andy Grieser, Zap2it New Line Cinema
