'The New Normal'
What we said then: "If the pilot's rough edges are smoothed out, and [Ryan] Murphy remains to true to his characters rather than capriciously altering their personalities like so much of 'Glee,' this heartwarming show just might become the sitcom success NBC so desperately needs."
What we say now: The determined attempt at exploring social issues is still awkward at times, but "The New Normal" cast has quietly blossomed into one of TV's strongest comedic ensembles. Andrew Rannells and Ellen Barkin earned most of the early attention, and remain terrific, but Justin Bartha, Georgia King, NeNe Leakes and especially scene-stealing child actress Bebe Wood have done an ace job fleshing out their characters' hilarious quirks. Whenever the show lets this unlikely gang bounce off each other, or just hang out (as in the great Thanksgiving episode, "Pardon Me"), it's a refreshing break from the TV norm.
