'The Polar Express'

Director Robert Zemeckis’ use of performance-capture animation made another Chris Van Allsburg tale a picture book come to life, perhaps more than any other movie. The process allowed star Tom Hanks to morph into a number of characters, most notably the conductor of a train taking children to the North Pole. The film’s staying power during the 2005 holiday season brought its gross to $160 million, since boosted by re-releases in both standard format and IMAX. -- Jay Bobbin, Zap2it Warner Bros.
