More snow fell in Connecticut early Thursday — harder in some spots than in others. And in places, it’s still falling.

“It’s going to be one of those days when one minute it’s snowing, the next minute it’s not snowing,” said FOX CT Meteorologist Joe Furey Thursday morning.

A winter weather warning is in effect for southern Middlesex and New London counties until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service warned of black ice forming below the fresh snow as temperatures dropped.

Snow fell furiously in the southern part of the state Thursday morning, cutting visibility and accumulating quickly. Some schools delayed classes, others closed for the day.

Accidents were reported on Route 72 and Route 9 in New Britain and on three streets in Berlin that had to be shut down. Conditions near the shore were described as blizzard-like.

By the time it’s over, the southern part of the state was projected to get 2 to 4 inches, with the immediate shoreline getting 3 to 5 inches, according to FOX CT Meteorologist Dan Amarante. The northern was expected to see 1 to 3, he said.

Snow showers could linger, especially along the shoreline, into the evening, he said.

“The farther south you go, the more you have to deal with it,” Furey said.

Temperatures were expected to drop before stopping in the 20s during the day Thursday; they could dip into the low teens and single digits on Thursday night, Amarante said.

“Back in the ice box,” said Furey.

Some handled the continued cold and snow with humor.

In Danbury, Mayor Mark Boughton’s robo-call Thursday morning telling residents to move cars off the road so plows can clear streets ended with his promise of an eventual change in weather.

“And just remember, spring is only 15 days, 9 hours, 14 minutes and 24 seconds away. I promise,” he said in the mid-morning message.

On Friday, the temperatures will be about 25 and Saturday it should be about 32, Amarante said. On Sunday, and into the following week, it will be in the 40s, he said.

“Next week, for the moment, looks extremely quiet,” Furey said. “We’ll take a shot at 50 [degrees] by the middle of next week.”

But don’t expect the weather to be warmer, he said.

“There are signs of another shot of cold air by the end of next week,” Furey said.

And there’s always the chance for more snow.

“I can tell you most definitely that it’s not done,” he said of winter weather.
