BARTMAN, A. Herbert, Sr.

Allen Herbert Bartman, Sr., 90, of Ferry Rd., Hadlyme, died Saturday (July 12, 2008), at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London after a short illness. Born in New London on December 1, 1917, he was the son of the late Allen and Catherine (Steward) Bartman. He attended Lyme Elementary School and graduated from Nathan Hale High School in Moodus. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy aboard the USS Astoria. When he returned from the war, he went to work at Electric Boat in Groton. A tool and dye maker by trade, he owned his own business, Bartman & Co. in Hadlyme during the 50’s after which he went to work for JT Slocomb in Glastonbury as an inspector of airplane engine parts. He eventually retired as an inspector at the Lee Company in Westbrook. He was an avid sportsman, and for many years he was a shad fisherman on the Connecticut River with his father. When his sons were young, he coached many Lyme Little League teams, sometimes transporting the whole team in his car to the cow fields in Killingworth. He also was Scout Leader to the Lyme Boy Scouts. During the 50’s, he was chief of the Lyme Fire Department and helped build the Hadlyme Fire Station. He was also a constable for the Town of Lyme doing patrol duty during the popular Hadlyme Public Hall square dances. Mr. Bartman was a member of the Lyme Board of Education when the subject of regionalization was first proposed. He was also a Past Master of Columbia Lodge of Masons of East Haddam and a member of Royal Arch Masons. His main hobby after retirement was gardening. He enjoyed growing tomatoes for his family and neighbors. He loved camping and spending the winters in Florida until he lost his sight. His grandchildren’s most favorite memories are of their camping trips from Canada to Florida with “Ana and Bompa”. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor (Gustavson) Bartman, his son Richard Bartman of Hadlyme, his daughter Linda Ward and her husband Richard of Hadlyme; five grandchildren, Ray, Jeff and Chris Ward and Allen and Kimberly Bartman and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Allen H. Bartman, Jr. and two sisters, Elsie Leatherbee and Doris Parise.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at Cove Cemetery, Hadlyme. A calling hour will held Tuesday, July 22 from 6-7 p.m. at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme.
