A tractor-trailer carrying nearly 1,000 turkeys crashed on Route 220 North on Wednesday morning, forcing one lane to close.
The accident happened around 7 a.m. near Route 669 (Murray Hill Road). The tractor-trailer overturned in the median.
About 960 turkeys were on the truck. The SPCA is on site and may take some of the turkeys.
The tractor-trailer was coming from Monroe, North Carolina, to Harrisonburg, Virginia. The truck driver said he was in a group of cars and had a hard time controlling his speed. The truck overturned in the curves north of Bassett Forks.
Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation are cleaning up the wreck, and are helping with traffic control.
It’s not clear when the lane will re-open.
VDOT asks drivers to use caution in the area.
