Drivers who plan to travel Interstate 81 in Montgomery County in upcoming days may experience delays due to scheduled nighttime detours and lane closures.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, a southbound detour will take place on Sunday. The detour will start at 10 p.m. each night and end at 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg).
Southbound lane closures will also take place Monday through Thursday. The closures will start at 10 p.m. each night and last until 6 a.m. the following morning.
The detours and lane closures are part of the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane along southbound Interstate 81 in Montgomery County between mile markers 120 and 125.
Dates and times are tentative and could be adjusted due to weather or work schedule. Signs and message boards will be in place to alert drivers to these detours and lane closures.
