Norwegian Cruise Line has decided to spread the duties of its next ship's godmother across a few more people -- the Rockettes.
"Norwegian Breakaway is being designed as New York's ship and we want everyone to know that this is the 'must-sail' cruise ship from New York in 2013 and beyond," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "I strongly believe that the Rockettes, one of the most beloved and recognizable New York icons, are the perfect choice to serve as the ship's godmothers. The Rockettes not only epitomize New York, they are known as strong role models and talented stars. We couldn't be more pleased to have these renowned dancers as the Godmothers of New York's ship, Norwegian Breakaway."
The Norwegian Breakaway is set to debut in New York next spring with a christening ceremony on May 8. The 4,000-passenger Breakaway currently under construction at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany will be the largest year-round cruise ship based in New York City. It's expected to bring 140,000 embarking passengers into New York City over two years.
With the Rockettes partnership, NCL will be designated the official cruise line of the Rockettes and Radio City Music Hall and official partner of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
For their part as godmothers, two Rockettes will sail along on the first six trips of the Breakaway plus the first sailing of each month thereafter.
It will sail seven-day Bahamas and Florida cruises as well as 12-day southern Caribbean cruises. It's the first of two ships on order by NCL with the second, the Miami-bound Norwegian Getaway slated for a spring 2014 delivery.
Aboard the Breakaway, the Rockettes, an 85-years-strong institution of the Big Apple, will be showcased with among other things, a historical retrospective in the ship's library, fitness classes designed the Rockettes and featured beverages.
"Having two Rockettes on board select sailings is going to be a very special opportunity for our guests to have more interaction with these incredibly talented and dynamic women," said Sheehan. "This truly takes the role of godmother to a new level as the Rockettes will be a special part of Norwegian Breakaway's unique cruising experience."
The line has rolled out several announcements about the ship's design. Highlights include The Waterfront, an open-air boardwalk-style collection of dining and entertainment options coupled with the three-deck 678 Ocean Place. Also announced were a massive water park with five slides and a three-story sports complex with the largest ropes course at sea.
