New Orleans

New Orleans (NewOrleansOnline.com)

Summer in New Orleans brings the promise of lots of heat and humidity, which means fewer tourists, which also means better rates for lodging. Among hotels offering summer deals on rooms are the Sheraton New Orleans and the Windsor Court Hotel. The Sheraton, on Canal Street in the French Quarter, recently underwent a $50 million revitalization and is advertising nightly rates as low as $105. We searched various dates through the summer and turned up some rates as low as $101 a night but also some well above $105. Info: sheratonneworleans.com. The Windsor Court, which sits just next to the French Quarter and has a rooftop pool, has a 30th anniversary rate it says is as low as $195 for stays of at least three nights. Our check here actually turned up rooms under $195 for every date we tried, with a low of $157. Info: tinyurl.com/n4ozycw

Singles cruises

If you're single and looking to take a cruise but want to meet up with other singles, SinglesCruise.com has offerings for Halloween and New Year's to make your heart go pitapat. For Halloween there's a seven-night eastern Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean International, and for New Year's it's eight nights in the southern Caribbean aboard Carnival. Neither cruise is solely for singles, but there are a variety of activities throughout that are open only to people booking through SinglesCruise.com. Lowest-priced cabins for Halloween are $1,076 per person double occupancy (they can match you with a cabin mate), and for New Year's it's $1,171. If having a roomie is going to cramp your style, you can pay the single supplement, which for the cheapest cabins amounts to about $900 for either cruise. Caribbean at a steal

It's hard to believe you can cruise in the Caribbean during the cold weather months for less than $100 a day, but Friendly Planet Travel has just such a deal aboard MSC Cruises for seven-night sailings from Miami. Rates for inside cabins are as low as $319 per person double occupancy for a Nov. 1 sailing date. Don't consider early November cold weather? Then how about $379 for Jan. 24 or $399 for Feb. 21? Matter of fact, all of the cheapest cabins from August through mid-April next year are less than $600, with the exception of two dates around Christmas and New Year's. With rates that low, it makes sense to upgrade to a balcony cabin, most of which are under or just slightly over that $100 a day figure. Ports of call for this cruise are St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Info: 800-555-5765, tinyurl.com/op63ayd
