Coghlan's LED Nail Pegs

Coghlan's LED Nail Pegs (Coghlan)

Name: Coghlan's LED Nail Pegs

What they are: Ten-inch steel tent stakes with very bright, swiveling LED lights affixed to the tops. The stakes also are tough as nails; in fact, they're basically huge nails that should penetrate any kind of ground except outright stone. The 9-lumen lights swivel more than 45 degrees upward, so you can point them toward the ground or up toward your tent to make it the showplace of the campground. The batteries will keep the stakes lit for 30 hours.

The good: For anyone who has tripped over a tent stake and line in the dark for the umpteenth time, these stakes are a godsend; simply use the stakes when you have a tent line near an area with high foot traffic. But their practicality goes beyond that. In a pinch, say, heading for the bathhouse in the middle of the night, they also work as flashlights. You could plant one by the campfire to read scary stories to the kids. Their uses go beyond camping. You could buy a few two-stake packs and use them to light a walkway for guests or to tip guests as to which driveway is yours.

The bad: The lights turn on by rotating the light itself. The problem is that in storage or in transit, the lights can easily turn on and run down the batteries. I would keep tape on them while traveling to make sure they stay off, or remove the batteries until you're ready to use them.

Cost: $4 to $6 for a pack of two, plus shipping
