Carnival Sunshine makes Port Canaveral debut

Port Canaveral may have lost a Dream, but now it has some Sunshine.

The Carnival Sunshine arrived this week to replace the Carnival Dream, which had sailed out of Central Florida since its debut in 2009. The Sunshine, while smaller, is one of Carnival Cruise Lines' first ships to feature all of its fleetwide enhancements known as Fun Ship 2.0, which include partnerships with Food Network star Guy Fieri, comedian George Lopez, EA Sports and Hasbro among other enhancements.

"Not only does Carnival Sunshine bring all of our Fun Ship 2.0 innovations to the Space Coast, it offers a lineup of cruises featuring the greatest diversity of destinations and cruise lengths ever offered from Port Canaveral," said Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill. "Central Florida is one of our fastest-growing markets and our continued growth at Port Canaveral would not be possible without the tremendous support from the Canaveral Port Authority."

The ship brings Carnival's year-round presence at the port back to three alongside the Carnival Liberty and Carnival Sensation. The 3,006-passenger Sunshine was originally built in 1996 and known as the Carnival Destiny, but debuted with its new moniker in 2013 after undergoing a massive $155 million, four-month drydock transformation.

Notable features aboard the ship include:

-- WaterWorks, a racing-themed water park featuring a 334-foot-long Twister water slide, which is the longest in the fleet.

-- Carnival's first three-deck-high Serenity adults-only retreat, with plush chaise lounges and chairs, a whirlpool, a cascading waterfall, teak-planked decks, a pool and complimentary dining area.

-- SportSquare, Carnival Sunshine's new open-air recreation complex that includes a ropes course, mini-golf course, a lighted half court for basketball and volleyball among other sporting amenities.
