New land adventure
Fort Lauderdale-based Silversea Cruises is featuring a new, three-night, optional Hiking in Cortina program offered as a land extension on Mediterranean cruises departing or concluding in Venice this summer. Cortina d’Ampezzo is a picturesque Italian town at the foot of the Dolomite Mountains that once hosted the Winter Olympics. But if strolling Cortina's ancient cobbled streets is not challenging enough, the new tour also features a guided alpine trek along a via ferrata, or "iron road," for more-adventurous travelers. The narrow route is equipped with steel cables, ladders and other fixed anchors, such as wooden walkways and suspended bridges, making it possible for hikers of all skill levels -- even those not versed in climbing technique -- to hike on ledges, climb vertical walls, and reach mountain peaks. Hikers set their own pace, and may hike for as little or as much time as they prefer. Accommodations are provided for three nights at the Rosapetra Spa Resort, where participants meet with their alpine guide to determine the itinerary best suited to their skill levels. The guide also provides safety equipment, including a helmet, harness, gloves, and other cable gear. During their stay at Rosapetra, guests will also enjoy complimentary access to the resort's heated swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, and Mediterranean and Turkish baths. The Hiking in Cortina program includes up to eight hours with a certified alpine guide, use of safety equipment, accommodations, transfers between airport, hotel and pier, and some meals. Participants should bring proper clothing, boots, and a backpack. Tour prices start at $1,979 per person/double occupancy. Among the voyages
for which this program is available is Voyage 5527 roundtrip from Venice on the Silver Spirit on Sept. 11-18. Ports of calls include Ravenna, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Koper and cruise fares are from $4,350 per person, double. Visit www.silversea.com.

Key West going to the dogs
As many as 200 short-legged, tail-wagging canine "revelers" are to stage a pre-New Year's Eve promenade before thousands of spectators Wednesday, Dec. 31, during the 10th annual Key West Dachshund Walk. The procession of pooches and their human companions begins at noon at the corner of Whitehead and Fleming streets in Key West's downtown. The walking route, kept brief to cater to the diminutive dogs' short legs, is to encompass the 400 block of Fleming Street, 500 block of Duval Street and entire one-block length of Appelrouth Lane. The 2013 "wiener walk" included approximately 200 dogs, many of them costumed or wearing offbeat accessories. Among the standouts were dachshunds portraying a "cocktail wiener" in a pseudo martini glass with oversized olives, "hot dogs" in buns, superheroes, sea creatures and a pirate carrying a sword nearly as long as he was. Canine participants typically include miniature and standard shorthaired, wirehaired and longhaired dachshunds. Some trot briskly along the route, while others ride in wagons or strollers. Dogs are accompanied by a supply wagon carrying water for thirsty walkers and plastic bags for quick cleanup of any accidents -- as well as providing transport for dogs that get tired along the way. The procession usually draws a few dachshund "imposters" bearing a suspicious resemblance to other breeds. Since pedigrees aren't checked, even "wiener wannabes" can strut their stuff in the lighthearted annual amble. There is no cost to participate, but donations of dog and cat food are requested for the community pet-food pantry operated by St. Mary Star of the Sea Outreach Mission. Spectators can watch the fun and meet the canine participants on Fleming Street between Whitehead and Duval streets. For information on Key West and the Florida Keys, visit www.fla-keys.com/keywest.

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel has launched a multi-phase, multi-year, $125 million redesign project that will transform every guest room in the 758-room Swan Hotel and the 1,509-room Dolphin Hotel. The transformation will occur without disruption to the guest experience as the majority of guest rooms will be available throughout the process. New ship named
Holland America Line revealed the name of its new 99,500-ton cruise ship slated for delivery in February 2016 will be ms Koningsdam. While the name pays homage to the company’s rich heritage and deep roots in the Netherlands, it also reflects a new era with a name that is an original in Holland America Line’s 141-year history. The 2,650-passenger ship is an evolution in design for the line — a new Pinnacle Class — and is being built at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard. Since 1883 every Holland America passenger vessel has borne the “dam” suffix, and ms Koningsdam carries on that tradition. The word koning means “king” in Dutch, and the name celebrates the majestic new ship. The name also pays honor to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands in over a century. Holland America Line has a long, proud history with the Netherlands. All of its 15 cruise ships that carry nearly one million guests each year fly the Dutch flag as they sail throughout the world, to more than 400 ports of call. And the line has many Dutch employees, including most of the fleet’s captains and officers. When the Koningsdam debuts she will be a new type of ship for Holland America Line. It is the largest ever built for the company and the increased size provides more opportunities to add new public spaces and venues, and several innovative features will debut on ms Koningsdam. Familiar spaces and amenities currently featured across the Holland America Line fleet will also be found on the new ship. Visit www.hollandamerica.com.
