  • A mock-proof evolution of the fanny pack, the Sholdit scarf...

    Bill Hogan, Chicago Tribune

A mock-proof evolution of the fanny pack, the Sholdit scarf adds a layer of style, warmth and two secret compartments. Wear as an infinity scarf or cross-body wrap, or convert to a shrug, clutch or head scarf, using a drawstring toggle to cinch the fit. We slung it over one shoulder and stuffed the larger pocket with two bananas, a red onion, a tomato, ID and wallet on a bike ride home from the market. The lightweight stretch fabric held up. Price seems steep at first ($49-$79 at sholdit.com), but then I picture the cost of a lost passport or wallet and decide this is my favorite new travel companion. Suitable for a scarf-wearing guy too, in a multitude of prints and solids, including basic black.

  • Brands such as Mephisto and Teva are familiar stomping grounds...

Brands such as Mephisto and Teva are familiar stomping grounds for comfort-driven travelers. And hiking boots are a special breed. (Asolo-usa.com comes recommended). But for women who want function and fashion, foldable Tieks by Gavrieli ballet flats ($165-$295; exclusively at tieks.com) are a favorite of Abercrombie & Kent travel clients, and they could pass for Lanvin. Best-selling novelist Jodi Picoult calls them "perfect for an author who has to live out of a suitcase for a month at a time while on book tour."For men, the stigma against the white-tennis-shoed-American-tourist has lifted (with some terms and conditions). Brian Bolke, owner of the Dallas designer boutiques Forty Five Ten and Five & Ten, travels at home and abroad in his simply sophisticated Common Projects white Achilles Low sneakers ($398 at fortyfiveten.com). "They go anywhere, day or night, and are easy to clean," he assured. Nordstrom just added the brand to its men's assortment.

A zip pocket is like a luxury hotel when you’re traveling. If just one garment you’re wearing has one, you can check in your ID, credit card and phone, then relax and enjoy the rest of the adventure.

What you pack beyond that can shoot in as many directions as flights out of Heathrow, depending on your destination and itinerary, not to mention body type and tastes.

But as fees climb and waits grow for checking baggage, packing efficiently counts more than ever. As a departure point, your packing list should check these three boxes (and we offer a few specifics below to do so):

Versatility: Establish a neutral base — black, gray, khaki.

Performance: Think wrinkle/stain resistance, moisture-wicking and lightweight.

Comfort: Reach for stretch fabrics, zip pockets and slip-on/off shoes.

If there’s space to spare after that, dark jeans get great mileage on the road. Plus, guys might consider adding a sport coat with some stretch (Uniqlo.com for a $29.99 jersey option). And women might invest in a maxi dress (MarieFranceVanDamme.com for a luxurious animal-print option). Why? As Wanderlust Festival marketing director Karina Mackenzie puts it: “I don’t mind looking like a schlub in the office, but I’d rather be overdressed when traveling, especially in Europe.”
