'Tangled' musical to replace 'Villains Tonight!' on Disney Magic

New 'Tangled' musical will begin on the Disney Magic in November 2015

Disney Cruise Line has revealed details of the new "Tangled" musical debuting on the Disney Magic in May.

"Tangled: The Musical" based on the 2011 Rapunzel film will featuring three new songs from composer-lyricist team Alan Menken and Glenn Slater on top of their popular songs from the movie, "When Will My Life Begin," "Mother Knows Best," "I Have a Dream" and "I See the Light," which won a Grammy Award.

The 45-minute musical directed by Gordon Greenberg and choreographed by Connor Gallagher joins "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story" and "Disney Dreams… An Enchanted Classic" aboard the Magic, but that means "Villains Tonight!" is making way for the new production. All three will be performed on every Disney Magic sailing beginning Nov. 11, when it sails out PortMiami on 4- and 5-night cruises to the Bahamas and western Caribbean before migrating back to Port Canaveral in February 2016.

"I'm thrilled to be creating another new musical for Disney, with such an extraordinary group of artists," Greenberg said in 2014. "Glenn Slater and I have known each other for years, and I've always been a huge Alan Menken fan. We had a blast collaborating on the workshop earlier this year, and I anticipate a joy filled adventure rehearsing the production. Connor Gallagher is one of New York's hottest young choreographers and a lovely person, to boot. His talent, invention and witty spark are a welcome addition to the amazing team."

The show follows the movie's storyline and features characters from the film including Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Mother Gothel and the horse, Maximus, which will be animated by puppet designer Michael Curry, known for his work on Broadway's "The Lion King."

The team also includes Tony Award-winning costume designer Paloma Young and set design by Bradley Kaye, who worked on Disney's "Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular."

The "Tangled" announcment follows news that a three-song arc from "Frozen" was being added to the ship's "Disney Dreams" production beginning this May. In that performance, Anna, Elsa and Olaf will star singing "For the First Time in Forever," "In Summer" and "Let it Go."
