With another year comes another loaded schedule of runDisney events at Walt Disney World.
Disney's Marathon Weekend will once again kick off the schedule with several events from Jan. 8-12. The 2014 Disney Marathon Weekend has expanded to five days and will include the new Walt Disney World 10K, a 6.2-mile timed event Jan. 10 at Epcot.
With the addition of the 10K, comes a new test for hardcore runners -- the Dopey Challenge.
The weekend now includes four main races -- the Disney Family Fun Run 5K (Jan. 9), the new 10K (Jan. 10), the Walt Disney World Half Marathon (Jan. 11) and the Walt Disney World Marathon (Jan. 12) -- along with runDisney Kids Races and the Mickey Mile, both taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Run all four main events during the weekend within the pacing requirements and receive six total medals -- one for each race along with a special Goofy-themed medal for Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge and a Dopey-themed medal for the Dopey Challenge.
In previous years, runners could earn the special Goofy medal by completing the half marathon Saturday and full marathon Sunday for a total of 39.3 miles. The Dopey Challenge pushes endurance tests to a new level with four races in four days for a total of 48.6 miles.
Some runners will also be taking part in the Runner's World Challenge, where they will have an opportunity to be coached by the magazine's editors and get advice from Runner's World experts on training, nutrition and injury prevention all in an effort to run their best half or full marathon.
The expanded five-day weekend begins Wednesday, Jan. 8 with the start of Disney's Health and Fitness Expo.
After the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend Jan. 16-19 at Disneyland Resort, the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend will return to Walt Disney World Feb. 20-23. The weekend will include the Disney Princess Half Marathon, the Disney Enchanted 10K, the Glass Slipper Challenge, the Disney Royal Family 5K and runDisney Kids Races.
On May 3, the Expedition Everest Challenge will return to Disney's Animal Kingdom for a nighttime adventure run with obstacles, a scavenger hunt and a post-race party.
Other scheduled runDisney events at Walt Disney World include The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend Oct. 4-5 and the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend Nov. 8-9.
